This week's three insights from me, two quotes from others, one question to carry with you...

I.
People ask me which Solano city is best. It's the wrong question, and I understand why they ask it. The right question is harder: which one is best for the life you're actually going to live here? Because these four cities are genuinely different from one another, and the differences don't show up on a listing.
II.
Here's how I'd describe them to a friend. Vacaville is the family default, and there's a reason so many people land here: newer subdivisions, room to spread out, and a town that's built for raising kids rather than commuting out of. Fairfield sits at the crossroads, more central and more varied, with older established neighborhoods and newer pockets that feel like different towns entirely. Suisun City is the value play, closer in than people assume and still catching up on reputation, which is exactly why some buyers find their best deal there. Benicia is the outlier, a waterfront town with its own character and a price tag to match, closest to the Bay and least like the rest of the county.
III.
But descriptions only get you so far. What actually settles it is spending unglamorous time in a place. Buy coffee on a Tuesday morning. Walk the neighborhood at dusk when people are home. Drive past the school at pickup. Notice whether the houses nearby are being maintained or let go, because that tells you more about the next decade than any statistic will. And ask yourself what you'll do on an ordinary Wednesday evening here, not what you'll do the week you move in. Most people choose a city from a listing photo and a Saturday visit. The ones who are still happy in year five chose it from the ordinary days.

ONE QUESTION TO CARRY WITH YOU:
What does an ordinary Wednesday look like in the place you're considering?
